Everything on this list appears somewhere in the resources on this site. This is the operational version: no argument, no context, just the order and the items. Print it, work down it, and do not skip a phase because the later ones genuinely will not work.
01Phase 1: the name standard
- Choose one canonical form of your full name
- Write a one-line description under fifteen words: role, field, city
- Choose one professional photograph you will use everywhere
- Write a hundred-word third-person bio
- Write a three-hundred-word third-person bio
- Save all of the above in one file as your name standard
- List every place your name currently appears online
- Update every editable one to the standard
- Note the ones you cannot edit and who to ask
02Phase 2: the entity home
- Register a domain containing your name, in your own name
- Confirm you personally own the domain, hosting and every account
- Homepage title tag: your full name plus your one-line description
- One H1 on the homepage, containing your name
- Name, role, organisation and city as selectable text, not inside images
- About page of at least four hundred words, in the third person
- One page per topic you want to be known for, five hundred words minimum
- A proof page listing your verifiable work with links out
- A contact route that actually reaches you
- Every page has a unique title tag under about sixty characters
- Every page has a hand-written meta description
- Every image has a real alt attribute
- The site works on a phone as its own layout, not a shrunken desktop
- Select all on the homepage, copy into a text editor, confirm your key facts are there
03Phase 3: the identity wiring
- Person schema in JSON-LD on the homepage and about page
- Schema includes name, jobTitle, worksFor, description, url, image, knowsAbout
- sameAs array lists every genuine, live profile and nothing else
- Schema facts match the visible page text exactly
- Schema validates without errors
- Schema is in the page source, not injected after load
- Every page's canonical matches its own live URL, including the trailing slash
- A sitemap exists and lists only URLs that resolve directly with no redirect
- The site is verified in Google Search Console
- The site is verified in Bing Webmaster Tools
- The sitemap is submitted and reads without errors
- Indexing requested on the homepage, about page and topic pages
04Phase 4: proof
- Inventory everything you have ever published, presented or been quoted in
- Find a live URL for each, using the archive where the original is gone
- Publish the proof page with title, source, year and link for each item
- Remove every adjective from it
- Reference your strongest three or four items from the about page
- Ask event organisers to correct your name and title on their pages where wrong
- Write one substantial original piece if the inventory turned up nothing
05Phase 5: records and distribution
- Pick three topics and write them down
- Set alerts on those topics and on the reporters who cover them
- Build a comment page on your site: topics, bio, photo, contact, response time
- Sign up to the journalist request services in your market
- Answer only requests you can genuinely speak to, the same day
- Pitch one contributed piece to a publication your buyers read
- Choose one primary platform and one secondary. Not five
- Set a cadence you could keep in a bad month
- Set up a capture file that syncs to your phone
- Publish the durable version on your own site first, always
- Link every profile back to your entity home
06Phase 6: the quarterly maintenance
Forever, every quarter, in a signed-out private window, using identical wording each time.
- Search your bare name and screenshot the whole first page
- Search name plus city, name plus field, name plus company
- Ask three AI assistants the same five fixed prompts, save verbatim with dates
- Spot-check five third-party records for name and title accuracy
- Check every link on your proof page still resolves
- Confirm your site still ranks first for your name
- Check Search Console for coverage errors
- Compare everything against last quarter and note what moved
- Fix only the two weakest items, then stop
07If you only have one weekend
Do phase one completely, then items one through six of phase two. That is the name standard and the core of the entity home. It is the highest-value weekend available in this entire subject, it costs almost nothing, and everything else becomes possible afterwards.
The five items that matter most, if you do nothing else
- One canonical name form applied everywhere
- A domain on your name with your facts as plain text
- A four-hundred word third-person about page
- Person schema with an accurate sameAs array
- One quarterly signed-out audit, saved and dated
What to remember
- Fifty-four items, six phases, dependency order. Do not skip ahead.
- Phase one and the first half of phase two are one weekend and unblock everything else.
- Phase four is usually faster than expected, because the proof already exists uncollected.
- Phase six is quarterly forever. Without it the build decays in about eighteen months.
- If you do nothing else: one name form, a domain with plain text facts, a real about page, correct schema, and a quarterly audit.
Questions people actually ask
What is on a personal branding checklist?
Six phases in dependency order: a name standard, an entity home on your own domain, the structured data that wires your identity together, a proof layer of verifiable records, earned third-party records plus distribution, and a quarterly maintenance audit. Fifty-four concrete items in total.
What should I do first if I have only a weekend?
Complete the name standard, meaning one canonical name form, one one-line description, one photograph and two bios, then apply it everywhere. Then get a domain on your name live with your facts as plain text and a proper third-person about page. That is the highest-value weekend in this subject.
How long does the full personal branding checklist take?
Phases one to three are roughly three weeks of real work. Phase four is usually an afternoon of inventory plus whatever new work you choose. Phase five runs for three to six months because other people control the timing. Phase six is quarterly, permanently.
Can I skip steps in the checklist?
Not the ordering between phases, because each one depends on the last. You can skip individual items inside a phase if they genuinely do not apply, but skipping from phase one to phase five means doing distribution work that points at a destination that cannot hold it.
What happens if I stop maintaining my personal brand?
It decays over roughly eighteen months, invisibly. Bios go stale and start contradicting your current work, links on your proof page rot, new records use a drifted version of your name, and the AI answers about you get progressively less accurate. The quarterly audit exists to catch exactly this.
